Professional Independent Insurance Agents of Illinois Offers Tips on Buying Insurance

With the recent increase in the cost of insurance, it is now more important than ever to be sure you are purchasing the insurance you need, without any unnecessary extras.

First, consider the five basic lines of insurance to see if they apply to your situation:
· Auto insurance-If you own or lease a car or are planning to in the near future, you will want to protect that investment with auto insurance. Comprehensive coverage helps you cope with the expense of accidents, vandalism or theft. If you are financing the vehicle, the lending institution will likely require you to carry auto insurance. Liability insurance will protect you if you are sued because of damage your vehicle caused.
· Health insurance-To cope with today's high medical costs, virtually everyone needs health insurance. If you are a young adult who has recently graduated, you may no longer be covered by your parents' policy, and may need one of your own.
· Homeowners or renters insurance-Whether you own a home or rent an apartment, you want to make sure your possessions are protected. Both homeowners and renters insurance offer comprehensive coverage at home and when you travel. They also offer liability protection in case you are sued.
· Life insurance-If you have dependents or are interested in purchasing life insurance that builds value as you pay the premiums, talk with your agent about the plans available.
· Disability Insurance-This is designed to provide required income should you be injured or disabled. The extent of coverage should be enough so that, when combined with your other assets, it would cover your living expenses.

You may not need the following unless you have special circumstances:
· Air travel insurance. It is rather expensive and is not comprehensive.
· Very specific policies such as contact lens insurance or cancer insurance. In most cases, it is better to have comprehensive policies such as renters or health insurance.

Most importantly, you should consult with your local independent insurance agent before making decisions regarding your insurance coverage. Your independent agent can assist you in choosing the right types of insurance and the appropriate coverage limits to suit your needs.
