Winterize
for a Safer Drive
The National Weather Service reports that each year 70% of the fatalities
related to ice and snow occur in automobiles. Winterizing your car is
a good way to help prevent roadside breakdowns and other accidents on
the road.
- Battery problems cause most cold-weather breakdowns. Have a professional
auto technician inspect your battery to make sure it is fully charged
and has enough power to get through the winter.
- Inspect the engines coolant level, condition and concentration.
(Experts recommend a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water.)
- Have your exhaust system examined for leaks.
- Make sure your heater and defroster are in good working condition.
- Inspect all lights and bulbs and replace any bulbs that have burned
out. Also, keep your lens clean for better visibility.
- Check your car's oil regularly and change as needed.
- To reduce wheel slippage, purchase good winter tires. Consider all
season tires, snow tires, or snow chains for areas where snow and
ice are significant.
- Replace old or worn windshield wipers and be sure you have windshield
washer fluid.
- Keep your gas tank at least half-full during the winter season to
avoid fuel-line freeze.
